If you’re not careful, it can become really easy to get distracted from what you’re trying to build. From potential partnership opportunities, internal projects, social media, chasing the money versus the mission—the pull away from your core vision is constant and seductive.
This blog is for healthcare business consultants looking to build their consultancy, and this week, we are tackling the critical topic of maintaining focus and avoiding the common distractions that derail many promising healthcare consulting businesses before they truly get off the ground.
This may be your first venture into consulting, or you may be a seasoned professional for whom this blog serves as a reminder to stay on course.
‘Should I start a podcast or a blog?’ ‘Should I diversify?’ ‘I need a new website!’
These temptations set in when things get hard, when your foundations aren’t firm enough, and when ego begins driving your decisions instead of purpose.
When You Feel the Pull of Distraction, Be Prepared….
You may experience a wandering eye;
- When you face rejection or a client project doesn’t go as planned
- During revenue plateaus or slow periods, triggering scarcity thinking
- When you compare yourself to peers
- When initial success leads to overconfidence, convincing you that you can effectively manage multiple directions at once
- During periods of burnout, when the grass looks greener anywhere but where you’re currently focused
- When your original vision hasn’t been tested against market realities, leading to premature pivots rather than thoughtful refinement
- When engaging in low value, high effort activities
- When personal identity becomes overly attached to external validation rather than internal measures of success
- During moments of self-doubt about your chosen direction
- When boredom with the essential but unglamorous work sets in
- When feeling pressure to match competitors’ offerings
- When tempted to reduce your prices
- When feeling pressure to say yes when you want to say no
I get it. I’ve been there and will no doubt be there again.
Stay on Track
So, when these moments occur, remind yourself:
- What’s the vision?
- Is the opportunity moving me towards or away from my vision?
You will know what to do. You may not want to do it… But you will know the answer to this.
Also;
💡 Mix up your surroundings, as this will likely inspire different thoughts and feelings.
💡Surround yourself with positive people.
💡Based on your vision, set a couple of goals to help you get the spark back.
About me
I am the founder and CEO of THC Primary Care and have been running my consultancy for ten years.
I create resources to support the leadership and management of primary care networks and also provide:
🎯 Interim leadership and management.
🎯 Facilitation.

🎯 Mentorship and coaching.
To date, my team and I have supported over 200 Primary Care Networks across England.
I am still the CEO at THC Primary Care and have no plans to leave what I’m doing because I’m truly lucky to say I love my business. However, creating this dedicated newsletter and supporting those especially interested in building their healthcare consulting careers has been an itch I have been wanting to scratch for a long time.
